For How Long Do I Have To Commit To Nutrisystem?

ByAva Alderman

I sometimes hear from people who are trying to gauge for how long they might be on the Nutrisystem diet. But they don't know whether there are any guidelines about the length of time that you should spend on this diet. I heard from someone who said: "I am looking to lose about 45 pounds. I am reasonably active, but not overly so. For how many months should I commit to Nutrisystem? Do I have to indicate a certain number of months or a set time for my commitment when I sign up?" I'll answer these questions below.

There Is Not Set Time To Remain On Nutrisystem. And You Don't Have To Make Any Commitment: I find that some people are under the mistaken impression that the company mandates that you have to remain on the diet for a certain amount of time or for a certain number of months. People also sometimes think that you have to commit for a set amount of time. This isn't the case. The only person who decides on your time frame or your commitment is you. Typically, people go off of this diet once they have lost their target amount of weight. In terms of the woman who asked the question, if she were like most people, then once she lost the 45 pounds, she would just decide to transition off the diet. When I told her this, she asked how she would know how much of a commitment to make without knowing how long all of this would take her.

The thing is, there is no commitment. You simply order your food while you still need it or are still trying to lose the weight. You can order the foods individually, but you'll often get by cheaper if you order a package. Although it's difficult to say exactly how long it will take to lose a set amount of weight (because this depends on many factors like your compliance and activity level,) you can get a rough estimate by looking at the averages. It's said that many people lose around 2 - 3 pounds per week on Nutrisystem. Since this woman said that she was reasonably active, I don't think it was a huge stretch to put her in the center of the range or at around 2.5 pounds per week. This is around 10 pounds a month. If she stayed at a reasonably constant rate, then she was looking at around 4 and 1/2 months before she lost the full 45 pounds. So that would be 4 one month packages. She could order a 2 week package for the remaining weight, but a better idea might be to go ahead and get a full month package for that 5th month so she would have extra food for transition. Many people find it helpful to go off of the diet gradually rather than all than once.

But to answer the question posed, there is no set amount of time to be on Nutrisystem. Most people will stay on the diet until they lose their target weight. And some give themselves a little extra time to transition off so that they have the best chance of long term success and of keeping the weight off.
