I often hear from people who want to know what to expect when starting Nutrisystem. One very common concern is how the person asking the question can expect to feel on the diet. People often wonder if they are going to feel hungry, grouchy, weird, weak, jittery or just odd.
Although I can't predict the future or anticipate how you personally might feel or respond, I can tell you from my own experience (and from that of others I know on this diet) what are some common feelings or experiences.
Many people aren't as hungry as they feared, but hunger is a possibility, particularly if you are used to eating junk food or you are used to overeating on a regular basis. One positive thing about this diet is that you eat quite regularly and, although the portions might be smaller than what you are eating right now (while not dieting,) you do get to add in fresh sides with every meal. So keep in mind that you are eating three complete meals as well as a snack and dessert so you should not have to go for long periods of time without eating.
Also, the diet does a good job of allowing you to have comfort foods that many people find enjoyable even when dieting. There are foods like burgers, fajitas, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate cake on the menu, but if you're used to greasy foods dripping in cheese or having huge portions of sugary or fat filled meals, you'll likely find these foods a bit lighter.
Many people worry that they will lack energy or feel jittery or grumpy on the diet. Know that none of the foods contain stimulants. You lose weight be eating less carbohydrates and calories while eating more protein and fiber. There are no artificial stimulants fueling the weight loss, which sometimes causes that jittery or annoyed feeling while you are on a diet.
Finally, it's possible to get into ketosis or fat burning mode of this diet. This metabolic state occurs when your body isn't getting its usual amount of carbohydrates and is getting more protein so that it's burning fat (rather than carbohydrates)as a source of fuel and energy. As a result, people sometimes feel a bit more energy when they get into ketosis and notice less hunger. Some feel relief when they aren't getting those fluctuations in blood sugar that are caused by too much carbohydrate consumption.
So to sum it up, while it's impossible for me to predict your experiences, I can tell you that many people do not have bad experiences or jittery feelings when starting the diet, although there can be an adjustment if you are have become used to bad eating habits. This is a bit of lifestyle change, although they do make every effort to ensure an easy transition (since you still get to eat comfort foods, desserts, and snacks.) But the only way to truly know is to try it and find out for yourself. Try to have patience with yourself and accept that there might be an adjustment period. But also know that most people find any slight adjustment period more than worth it when the results start coming in.
