What is Paleo diet? Can it make you thin, and healthy? These are the usual questions that you hear out of this term. To help you shed light onto this question- here are some facts, and overview for it.
Paleo diet is also known as "Caveman diet", " Stone Age", or "Hunter Gatherer" diet. Well from the words itself you can conclude that its something ancient, and related onto how the first people eat. It is a modern diet based on the projected eating habit and culture of our ancestors, including wild plants, and animals and various Hominid species, which are technically from the Paleolithic era- approximately 2.5 million years to 10, 000 years ago.
This diet consists of foods that can be personally obtained- by fishing or hunting, such as seafood, and meat and can be gathered, such as eggs, fruits, vegetables,, herbs and spices. Food groups that were never consumed before the Neolithic or agricultural revolution are excluded from the diet - examples of which are oils, sugar, and legumes. There is a division of Paleo dieters that include this for a healthy twist though.
The main takeaway of this diet is to ensure that we have the right and supposed to be healthy levels of glycemic load, fatty acid composition, micronutrients density, acid-base balance, sodium-potassium ratio, and fiber content. It stands on the belief that when the processed foods are introduced to humans, we started experiencing diseases, and health problems.
To further guide on what are the foods advised for this diet, here are some things to remember:
Protein (all-you-want) - In this diet, you are encouraged to eat a lot of protein from meat, pork and poultry including its organs- like liver, gizzard, heart, intestines. For the fish same applies- fish that are being caught, and the shellfish as well.
Vegetables is allowed - of course, the health benefits of vegetables are purely allowed in this diet, because this is something that is being gathered ever since. You can consume this either fresh of frozen. SO no worries on the needed fiber and nutrients by the body.
Fruits are also allowed - with low to moderate consumption - surely, fruits are also permitted in this diet. It is just that you also need to control the volume of this because as you know - sugar adds to weight, right?
Eliminate sugar and dairy - these foods are not really present during the ancient times, so better cut it off. This includes packaged juices, soft drinks, chocolates, cheese, and even heavy creams. If you think you cannot live without these food items, then Paleo diet is not the right attack for you.
Eat when you are hungry- make sure to eat once your stomach grumbles, and do not skip meals- which is big no-no. This will ensure that your metabolism is up and running.
So here, you have every basic knowledge you need to move forward and be a Paleo dieter. Good Luck!
