Your Raw Toddler: Keeping Little Ones Healthy

ByJenni M Weems

Our children are not healthy and it is showing! Diabetes is now one of the top chronic illnesses American children have. We have 3-year-olds getting what was once considered adult-onset diabetes. This does not have to be your child!

Not only diabetes, but also the majority of our chronic illnesses are preventable through adopting a health routine that encompasses all areas of your lifestyle; from the food you eat, how you exercise, as well as how much sleep and water you get. However, the number one thing you can change that will have the greatest impact on your child's health is what you put on their plate.

The very best diet for health, in fact the diet we were designed to eat, is a raw food diet predominated by fruits, but which may also include vegetables, dark leafy greens, and some nuts and seeds. Only feeding your child healthy foods like those contained within the raw diet spectrum will give your child the best chance possible of living a healthy life. And it is never too late to start! If your child is a toddler now and has been eating an unhealthy diet, it is easy to transition them onto a healthy raw food diet.

The best thing is that children absolutely love fruit! It is easy to get toddlers to drink fruit smoothies, snack on melons, and thoroughly enjoy carrying around a banana and munching as they go about their play. What may not be so easy I know, is convincing everyone around you that what you are feeding your child is enough (in fact, the healthiest thing you could be doing for them!).

Many loving grandparents or other family members may question whether they are getting enough protein or calcium, or a myriad of other worries that have been pushed upon them by our Big Food companies (mostly the meat and dairy industry). Sometimes this person may even be your spouse. Instead of arguing continuously about your child's diet, what I have found to be the best solution is to meet them where they are and start with a compromise. If protein is their concern, feed your child a ton of raw fresh fruits and also give them some high-protein plant foods for a bit, like perhaps some beans. This will help calm the questioning family member while you begin the transitioning process.

After this family member sees how amazing your child is doing with their new healthy way of eating, their worries will be calmed and you can move forward with transitioning your toddler.
