Healthy Foods in Paleo Diet

ByErnesto L Santos

As disease and obesity begin to get out of hand in today's world, the search intensifies for the perfect diet that would bring down the incidence of these major health problems. The search may have ended in the Paleo diet which consists of foods that our prehistoric ancestors consumed before the advent of agriculture and modernization of food preparations. The growing consensus is that this diet is the ultimate in high-nutrition foods.

The foods in the Paleo diet are good sources of energy and protein such that an increasing number of athletes now stick to this daily diet. A switch to this diet is not so hard to do since the foods in it are pretty much the same things we eat every day. The key is how you obtain and prepare these foods.

Basic Paleo diet foods.

The foods that are essential to this diet are animal and poultry meat, fish, fruits and vegetables. These food items must be consumed fresh, free of fats and additives and cooked just slightly. Your goal is to approximate the ways the cavemen ate their foods when fire for cooking was yet to be perfected and they ate their meats and plant foods as soon as they were hunted or gathered to prevent spoilage. For this reason, the foods that came to be known after the agriculture revolution should be avoided. The foods under this heading include sugar, salt, grains and dairy products which make people susceptible to weight increase that leads to diabetes and heart problems.

Benefits of Paleo diet

The foods in this diet are low in carbohydrates since it avoids grains, potatoes, bread and sweetened beverages that are high in carbs. Carbohydrates are good provider of energy for other living organisms but are not essential in humans. The human body can derive its energy from protein and certain fats which pose less health risks.

While the Paleo diet supplies less carbohydrates, it provides lots of fiber that comes from most fruits and vegetables. Enough fiber in your diet will make you feel full for a longer period and thus prevent you from overeating. It will also help you lower the risk of developing heart diseases, cancer, kidney stones and diabetes.

The Paleo diet is also useful in combating the symptoms of allergies especially those caused by foods. Such allergies take place because of chemicals and preservatives contained in certain foods. The Paleo diet does not contain the allergy-causing gluten and casein, which are commonly used in food processing. All this means that you can shed those extra pounds without the use of food supplements and expensive but risky reducing pills.

The caveman survived the harshness of the planet earth at the dawn of civilization by making the basic foods in nature their everyday staple. All they had were meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and nuts in their rawest form. They were more energetic, had leaner bodies and suffered from less of the illnesses that plague today's humans.

Your Raw Toddler: Keeping Little Ones Healthy

ByJenni M Weems

Expert Author Jenni M Weems

Our children are not healthy and it is showing! Diabetes is now one of the top chronic illnesses American children have. We have 3-year-olds getting what was once considered adult-onset diabetes. This does not have to be your child!

Not only diabetes, but also the majority of our chronic illnesses are preventable through adopting a health routine that encompasses all areas of your lifestyle; from the food you eat, how you exercise, as well as how much sleep and water you get. However, the number one thing you can change that will have the greatest impact on your child's health is what you put on their plate.

The very best diet for health, in fact the diet we were designed to eat, is a raw food diet predominated by fruits, but which may also include vegetables, dark leafy greens, and some nuts and seeds. Only feeding your child healthy foods like those contained within the raw diet spectrum will give your child the best chance possible of living a healthy life. And it is never too late to start! If your child is a toddler now and has been eating an unhealthy diet, it is easy to transition them onto a healthy raw food diet.

The best thing is that children absolutely love fruit! It is easy to get toddlers to drink fruit smoothies, snack on melons, and thoroughly enjoy carrying around a banana and munching as they go about their play. What may not be so easy I know, is convincing everyone around you that what you are feeding your child is enough (in fact, the healthiest thing you could be doing for them!).

Many loving grandparents or other family members may question whether they are getting enough protein or calcium, or a myriad of other worries that have been pushed upon them by our Big Food companies (mostly the meat and dairy industry). Sometimes this person may even be your spouse. Instead of arguing continuously about your child's diet, what I have found to be the best solution is to meet them where they are and start with a compromise. If protein is their concern, feed your child a ton of raw fresh fruits and also give them some high-protein plant foods for a bit, like perhaps some beans. This will help calm the questioning family member while you begin the transitioning process.

After this family member sees how amazing your child is doing with their new healthy way of eating, their worries will be calmed and you can move forward with transitioning your toddler.

Why Cavemen Were Healthy

ByMarco W Cepeda

The Paleo diet made the cavemen healthy and quick in movements because the foods in it were closer to nature without the harmful effects of sugar, salt and other additives or artificial flavorings that became part of modern man's diet after the agriculture revolution. It was the absence of "additives" and "artificial" in foods that basically distinguishes the Paleo diet from the Neolithic diet of today.

Before we learned farming, the cavemen hunted animals and gathered food plants from far and near. The physical activity that accrues from walking great distances for food may also be part of the health secrets of the Paleo diet.

Lean Meat

Meat was a prime staple of the caveman's daily diet but it came from animals that roamed freely in forests and plains. This meant that the meat was lean and free of fats that are heavy among animals reared and pampered in today's farms and ranches. Domesticated animals are also raised on artificial feeds unlike the animals that the cavemen hunted which fed on pasture and grass. That again is the big difference between the Paleo diet and today's Neolithic diet. The animals that the cavemen hunted gave healthier cuts of meat.

So if you want to go on a Paleo diet, the meats for you are the lean cuts of beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey. If you have a passion for steaks, make sure it's flank steak, London broil, sirloin steak, pork chops, etc. Even hamburger patties are fine if they contain less fat and broiled in as little lard as possible.

When it comes to fowls, you will hew closer to the Paleo diet if you pick the breast portion, the organs and even the eggs. Egg consumption must however be limited to 1 per day.

No Processed Foods

Processed or packaged foods are anathema to the Paleo diet since food processing came millions of years after the caveman. When you process foods to preserve or make them more attractive to consumers, you put all kinds of preservatives in them, plus sugar and salt. They are also packed in materials made from lead and other chemicals.

Processed foods to avoid are crackers, sweets, wheat and grain byproducts, bread and pastries. So are ice cream, butter, cheese, cow's milk and other dairy products. The least health consequence you get from putting these foods into your mouth are digestive problems.

Good and Bad

The good foods according to the Paleo diet are lean meat, chicken, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts and berries. For vegetables, the best are leafy ones and roots except potatoes and their variants. Nuts are good if these are walnuts, macadamia, almond and Brazil nuts. As for berries, you have blueberries and raspberries, among others.

The foods to avoid are sugar, salt, grains, beans and dairy products.

If you follow the Paleo diet strictly, the immediate result is an increase in your vitamins and minerals intake and a decrease in your toxin ingestion.
