ByBarbara Shirley

People wishing to pursue singing as a serious career choice not only need to practice and exercise their breathing and posturing but also need to take care of what they eat. Diet can play a very important role in impacting your vocals and their surrounding muscles and chords. An aspiring singer or even a professional one needs to take care of their diet, some pointers are given below to help you out to decide what you are putting inside of you and its impact.

• Acidic and spicy food can lead to swelling of the vocal chords, try avoiding them. Dairy can lead to a slightly changed voice; hence try avoiding dairy and its products before a performance or session. Try eating whole grains and fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, C and E, they help in keeping the mucus lining of the throat healthy. Try eating light meals that are easily digested by your body like a leafy green salad, if you wish to add carbohydrates and protein to it go for a small serving of whole wheat pasta along with chicken, fish or soya. Try avoiding creamy and cheesy sauces and go for light dressings instead. A full stomach will not lead the diaphragm expand properly thereby hindering your performance, so eat a couple of hours before your performance and snack lightly if need be.

• Never stay hungry or skip meals before a performance as it can lead to dehydration and excess energy demands. You may even end up light headed and dizzy with a growling stomach, which will eventually harm your performance as a singer.

• Keep hydrated at all times. Your voice is created by movements of your internal muscles. To reach peak levels of energy and for durability and elasticity of those muscles, it is essential to hydrate them, it acts as a sort of lubricant and helps in reducing friction inside. Also, remember to drink room temperature water as either too hot or too cold water can affect the chords and its muscles in a bad way.

• Try avoiding alcohol and fizzy beverages as they can cause dehydration of the vocal muscles and some alcoholic beverages can even lead to irritation of the mucus membrane in the throat. Caffeinated beverages too can dehydrate and cause irritation inside. Caffeine sometimes even leads to excess mucus production, causing you to frequently clear your throat. Sometimes it even causes stiffness of the throat as well; also, you might even experience slight burning or irritation at the end of your throat after drinking coffee or its like. So remember not to drink any caffeinated beverages before any session or performance for fear of hindering it.
